University registrations and recognition

Registrations, authorizations and supporting records are presented according to the scope and date of each document, distinguishing entity registration, religious exemption, branch authorization and graduate-document authentication.

The Islamic University of Minnesota is a domestic nonprofit corporation registered in Minnesota since June 28, 2013. The Minnesota Secretary of State’s online record currently lists it as “Active / In Good Standing” under file number 679569200027. According to university information, its tax identification number is EIN 80-0938606 and it operates as a tax-exempt organization under section 501(c)(3).

A Minnesota Office of Higher Education letter dated November 7, 2007 states that the bachelor’s, master’s and PhD programs in Islamic Studies named in the letter remained religiously exempt. The letter’s scope is limited to those programs and is not described here as general institutional accreditation for every university field.

The university works to develop its programs and curricula and to establish international academic agreements. Graduate documents may undergo authentication by the competent authorities according to the country of use, but document authentication does not itself constitute program accreditation or degree equivalency.

The university states that its Mogadishu branch received Somali federal higher-education authorization number WWWHTS/XAG/161/2016 on September 8, 2016, with a regional scope covering Somalia, Kenya, Djibouti, Uganda, Eritrea and Sudan. The document shown below is a later renewal certificate for the East Africa office, valid from March 18, 2023 through March 17, 2025. It is therefore presented as a historical record; the competent authority should be consulted for current status.

Notice: nonprofit entity registration, religious exemption, document authentication and branch authorization in a specific country are distinct legal statuses. Degree recognition and equivalency are always governed by the competent authority in the country of use and the program under review.
