Faculty of Sharia and Law Discusses Research Proposal

The Faculty of Sharia and Law at the Islamic University of Minnesota - Main Center held a scientific seminar session on Monday evening, May 4, 2026, to discuss the research proposal submitted by researcher Fahmi Qarqoom, a PhD candidate in the Department of Law. The proposal was entitled: "Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflicts: A Comparative Analytical Study in Light of the Rules of International Humanitarian Law and Islamic Jurisprudence."

The session was organized under the supervision of the Deanship of Graduate Studies via the Zoom platform and witnessed distinguished academic participation from individuals interested in contemporary legal and humanitarian issues, particularly those related to the protection of civilians during armed conflicts from the perspectives of international humanitarian law and comparative Islamic jurisprudence.

The research proposal aimed to examine the legal and jurisprudential dimensions related to the protection of civilians, analyze the points of convergence and divergence between the rules of international humanitarian law and the provisions of Islamic jurisprudence in this field, and highlight the humanitarian and legislative aspects that contribute to reducing violations against civilians during armed conflicts.

The seminar discussion committee was chaired by Professor Dr. Mohammed Shoaib Abdulmaqsoud, Head of the Department of Law, and included Dr. Waleed El-Touni and Dr. Karam Saeed as committee members. The committee members presented several scholarly observations and methodological recommendations intended to enrich the study and strengthen its research framework.

This seminar comes as part of the scientific and research activities organized by the Faculty of Sharia and Law in line with its commitment to supporting academic studies addressing contemporary legal issues with humanitarian and intellectual dimensions, as well as promoting specialized research in legal and Sharia-related fields.
