PhD Seminar Examines Islamic Dispute Resolution Mechanisms in Governance of Financial Contracts

The Department of Islamic Studies in English at the College of Islamic Studies of the Islamic University of Minnesota - Main Center organized a scientific seminar via Zoom to discuss the research proposal submitted by doctoral researcher Abdulsalam Abduljalil Obimi, entitled “An Analytical Study of Islamic Dispute Resolution Mechanisms in the Governance of Financial Contracts in Nigerian Non-Interest Banks.” The seminar was attended by the discussion committee, faculty members, and researchers.

The seminar was chaired by Associate Professor Dr. Manal Mustafa, Head of the Department of Islamic Studies in English, with the participation of Dr. Ahmed Mohamed Al-Khalidi and Associate Professor Dr. Zakaria Ibrahim. The committee reviewed various scientific and methodological aspects of the research proposal and provided a number of observations and recommendations aimed at developing the proposal and strengthening its academic framework.

The research proposal examines dispute resolution mechanisms based on the principles of Islamic Sharia, with a focus on their role in governing financial contracts within Nigerian non-interest banks. It also seeks to analyze the effectiveness of these mechanisms in promoting compliance with Sharia principles, upholding the values of justice and transparency, and supporting the development of Islamic banking practices in Nigeria.

The seminar featured an in-depth academic discussion addressing the significance of the research topic, its objectives and methodology, and its theoretical framework, in addition to examining its analytical and applied dimensions. The committee members also provided a number of scholarly recommendations intended to enrich the proposal and strengthen its ability to achieve its objectives and deliver the intended academic contribution.

The seminar forms part of the academic activities organized by the Deanship of Graduate Studies and Scientific Research at the Islamic University of Minnesota to monitor doctoral research proposals, support the quality of academic studies, and encourage research addressing contemporary issues in Islamic economics and finance. These efforts contribute to advancing the University’s role in enriching knowledge and promoting scientific research at both the local and international levels.
